The Management Development Certificate program from Online and Continuing Education, University of Alberta provides a solid grounding in managerial techniques and processes, while also equipping learners with the specific skills needed in management and supervisory positions. Courses within this program cover topics like human resource management, financial management, marketing, strategic management, and business communication, among others.
Designed for individuals in supervisory or management positions who wish to upgrade or sharpen their managerial abilities, this program will also benefit prospective or aspiring managers ready to take the next step in their careers. Students from all sectors (government, industry, not-for-profit organizations, or small to large enterprise) have completed this career-enhancing program to build relevant skills.

If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course you’ve taken will be applied toward your Certificate as long as it is still part of the program plan at the time of your application. Please note, program requirements are subject to change over time.
Enrolling in the program is a requirement if you want to obtain the certificate. You may apply for admission as you start your studies or, if you prefer, after you have taken one or more courses.
We are open to students with a variety of educational and professional backgrounds. Our expectation is that you have a commitment to learn and achieve your continuing education goals.
This part-time program is comprised of three core courses and 156 hours of electives. Typical course load is one to two courses per term, and we offer courses in Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall terms. When following this structure, students can fulfill the certificate requirements within two to three years.
Courses do not have to be completed in any specific order, allowing students to choose the courses that best fit their schedule in any given term. Please note that it is recommended for students to complete Strategic Management closer to the end of their program.
Evening, weekday, and weekend learning opportunities are available to accommodate a variety of schedules. A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the certificate (3.5 or higher earns a certificate with distinction).

Once you are admitted, you can verify your program requirements by logging into the University of Alberta’s student portal, Bear Tracks, to view your Academic Advisement.
Applying for Graduation
Submit your request to graduate to obtain your credential, receive a parchment, and (optionally) attend the graduation ceremony. Apply for graduation between November 1 and February 1 via Bear Tracks.
- If you haven’t previously completed a program application, you must do so in order to qualify for graduation.
- You must apply for graduation even if you do not plan to attend the ceremony.
Many of the electives are also part of other programs, such as professional development series in Project Management, Change Management, Business Analysis and Business Strategy. Some of the electives are also part of the Advanced Certificate in Leadership. Courses from the Management Development Certificate may qualify for recognition toward the following professional designations:
- CIM — Canadian Institute of Management
- CCAP — Canadian Certified Administrative Professional
