Management at all levels has a dramatic impact on the performance of an organization, influencing areas from productivity and growth to profitability and employee retention. Organizations count on people to excel at decision-making, problem-solving, motivation methods, and strategic planning.

The Management Development Certificate program from Online and Continuing Education, University of Alberta provides a solid grounding in managerial techniques and processes, while also equipping learners with the specific skills needed in management and supervisory positions. Courses within this program cover topics like human resource management, financial management, marketing, strategic management, and business communication, among others.

Designed for individuals in supervisory or management positions who wish to upgrade or sharpen their managerial abilities, this program will also benefit prospective or aspiring managers ready to take the next step in their careers. Students from all sectors (government, industry, not-for-profit organizations, or small to large enterprise) have completed this career-enhancing program to build relevant skills.

This part-time program is comprised of three core courses and 156 hours of electives. Typical course load is one to two courses per term, and we offer courses in Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall terms. When following this structure, students can fulfill the certificate requirements within two to three years.

Courses do not have to be completed in any specific order, allowing students to choose the courses that best fit their schedule in any given term. Please note that it is recommended for students to complete Strategic Management closer to the end of their program.

Evening, weekday, and weekend learning opportunities are available to accommodate a variety of schedules. A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the certificate (3.5 or higher earns a certificate with distinction).
