The Human Resources Management Certificate from the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Extension is focused on enhancing the learners’ abilities to think strategically, while also exploring effective human resource management processes, methods, and techniques. Content covered includes workforce planning, managing performance, HR metrics, strategic management, labour relations, and change management.
Participants in this program are generally interested in working in the area of human resources or in a supervisory or management position. Students come from all sectors: government, industry, not-for-profit organizations, and small to large enterprise.
Examine current issues in human resources management.
Understand how and why the human resources function is an integral part of an organization’s core management team.
Explore the theory and practice of organizational environment and structure, and the behaviour of groups and individuals within organizations.
Acquire up-to-date information in employee benefits, compensation administration, labour relations, grievance arbitration, and more.
Will help you better prepare to be successful in writing the National Knowledge Exam (NKE - the CPHR entrance exam)

You can register for a course without applying angd enrolling in the program. If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course you’ve taken will be applied toward your Certificate as long as it is still part of the program plan at the time of your application. Please note, program requirements are subject to change over time.
Enrolling in the program is a requirement if you want to obtain the certificate. You may apply for admission as you start your studies or, if you prefer, after you have taken one or more courses.
We are open to students with a variety of educational and professional backgrounds. Our expectation is that you have a commitment to learn and achieve your continuing education goals.
Students who complete the entire Change Management workshop series can receive credit for 39 hours of elective credit towards this Human Resource Management Certificate. For further information, contact our program office at 780−492−3027.
Accreditation Opportunity
The Human Resources Management program will help you better prepare to be successful in writing the National Knowledge Exam (NKE).
This part-time program is comprised of four core courses and four electives courses. Each course is 39 hours in length, for a total of 312 instructional hours. Typical course load is one to two courses per term. When following this structure, most students are able to fulfill the certificate requirements within two to three years.
Courses do not have to be completed in any specific order, allowing students to choose the courses that best fit their schedule in any given term. Evening, weekend, and weekday learning opportunities are available to accommodate a variety of schedules.
A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the certificate (3.5 or higher earns a certificate with distinction).
Once you are admitted, you can verify your program requirements by logging into the University of Alberta’s student portal, Bear Tracks, to view your Academic Advisement.
- An application fee of $100 is required for admission into the program.
- Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you register for your classes.
- Courses are GST-exempt.
- Some courses require a textbook at an additional cost.
- Eligible for the Canada-Alberta Job Grant.
