Developed to meet the communicated needs of those in the health and safety industry, the Professional Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety program expands and builds upon the OHS Certificate program to foster a deeper knowledge and provide new skills for health and safety professionals.
The courses in our diploma program are closely aligned with the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals’ CRSP accreditation requirements (see OHS — BCRSP CEU equivalency) This alignment serves two purposes: it allows us to meet industry needs and, at the same time, gives our graduates a more straightforward path to build their health and safety careers.

The requirements below apply to students enrolled in the OHS Diploma Program on or after July 1, 2020. If you applied to the OHS Diploma Program prior to July 1, 2020, please refer here for your program requirements.
Only interested in taking a course? You can register for a course without applying and enrolling in the program – browse our Occupational Health & Safety courses. If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course you’ve taken will be applied toward your Diploma as long as it is still part of the program plan at the time of your application. Please note, program requirements are subject to change over time.
To be admitted into the professional diploma program, you must have an OHS certificate. The University of Alberta’s OHS Certificate program meets the admission required for the Professional Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety program. OHS certificates from other recognized post-secondary institutions may be accepted, though some conditions apply. Please contact the UAlberta OHS program office (ohs@ualberta.ca by email, 780−492−4149 by phone) to confirm if your OHS certificate from an outside institution is eligible for admission.
Individuals courses, as well as professional development series, may be taken for general studies and do not require student to first be admitted into the professional diploma program.
The Professional Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety consists of 12 core courses and 131 hours of elective courses.
This program is designed for part-time study and can be completed in as little as 18 months. Most students complete it in 2-3 years (and have a maximum of 8 years to complete).
A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the diploma.

CRSP designation
Completion of this diploma program meets the formal education requirements for the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) – view our equivalencies chart. The designation of choice for Canadian OHS professionals, the CRSP designation is granted by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP).
Simultaneous credit
Electives in the professional diploma can be used as credit in both the diploma and in a professional development series’ allowing students to receive additional, specialized recognition in Workplace Wellness Leadership, Change Management, Project Management.
- An application fee of $100 is required for admission into the program.
- Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you register for your classes.
- Courses are GST-exempt.
- Some courses require a textbook at an additional cost.
- Eligible for the Canada-Alberta Job Grant.
