Workplace Violence and Harassment Law

    EXOS 4639 is offered this spring:

Work­place vio­lence and harass­ment leg­is­la­tion does not sim­ply involve respond­ing to inci­dents; it also requires an under­stand­ing of the haz­ardous con­di­tions that may lead to vio­lence or harass­ment and ensur­ing that such haz­ards are prop­er­ly con­trolled. This sem­i­nar will acquaint you with the law sur­round­ing work­place vio­lence and harass­ment (includ­ing the recent changes to the OHS Act and OHS Code) and dis­cuss strate­gies to ensure that you and your orga­ni­za­tion are com­ply­ing with the law.

What you will learn

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify and analyze legal requirements in relation to workplace violence/harassment prevention and incident management/response.
  • Explore controls and prevention strategies.
  • Discuss prevalent workplace violence/harassment issues such as worksite/work-related suicides, PTSD, and domestic violence.
  • Explore industry specific issues such as violence in the healthcare industry and convenience store/gas stations.
  • Discuss the legal liability that you and your employer may face in relation to workplace violence and harassment.

Since 2001, Mark Greene has worked for Alberta Justice, where he is currently the lead civil legal counsel for Occupational Health and Safety. Mark also provides advice to many government departments in respect to occupational health and safety issues. His background experience includes environmental law, transportation safety law, family law (family protection), and legal counsel to the Law Enforcement Review Board. Mark has been a guest speaker at many events, including conferences hosted by the Health and Safety Conference Society of Alberta, Canadian Society of Safety Engineers, the Alberta Construction Safety Association, Residential Construction Industry Conference, and the Petroleum Safety Association of Canada.
