There is a growing demand for business-savvy leaders that combine technical expertise with an ability to engage teams and think strategically. In the world of technically driven enterprises, adding management qualifications to a technical background gives professionals the competitive edge needed to move into senior management positions.
The Management Development Certificate for Professional Engineers and Geoscientists from Online and Continuing Education, University of Alberta is a program developed in partnership with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). Designed to meet the specific needs of these professionals, this program enables participants to be positioned as leaders within their organizations and to distinguish themselves as individuals with strong and informed decision-making skills.
Courses in the program cover areas such as operational and strategic management, organizational behaviour, managerial economics, interpersonal communications, and project planning, among others. Eligibility is limited to professional members or members-in-training of APEGA.
This program is for engineers or geoscientists who want to expand their career options through formal management education. The certificate will benefit both emerging leaders and those already in management positions. In order to enrol in the program, learners must be professional members or members-in-training of APEGA.

If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course you’ve taken will be applied toward your Certificate as long as it is still part of the program plan at the time of your application. Please note, program requirements are subject to change over time.
Eligibility to this program is limited to professional members or members-in-training of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
Enrolling in the program is a requirement if you want to earn the certificate. You may apply for admission as you start your studies or, if you prefer, after you have taken one or more courses.
This part-time program is comprised of five core courses and 78 hours of electives. Typical course load is one to two courses per term, three terms a year. When following this structure, students can fulfill the certificate requirements within two to three years.
Courses do not have to be completed in any specific order, allowing students to choose the courses that best fit their schedule in any given term. Please note that it is recommended for students to complete Strategic Management closer to the end of their program.
Evening, weekday, and weekend learning opportunities are available to accommodate a variety of schedules. A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the certificate (3.5 or higher earns a certificate with distinction).

Once you are admitted, you can verify your program requirements by logging into the University of Alberta’s student portal, Bear Tracks, to view your Academic Advisement.
Applying for Graduation
Submit your request to graduate to obtain your credential, receive a parchment, and (optionally) attend the graduation ceremony. Apply for graduation between November 1 and February 1 via Bear Tracks.
- If you haven’t previously completed a program application, you must do so in order to qualify for graduation.
- You must apply for graduation even if you do not plan to attend the ceremony.
Many of the electives are also part of other programs, such as professional development series in Project Management, Change Management, Business Analysis and Business Strategy. Some of the electives are also part of the Advanced Certificate in Leadership. - Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you register for your classes.
- Courses are GST-exempt.
- Some courses require a textbook at an additional cost.
