Explore dif­fer­ent facets of wind pow­er tech­nol­o­gy and learn about the plan­ning, design and devel­op­ment of wind tur­bine ener­gy projects. Gain an under­stand­ing of mechan­i­cal and tech­ni­cal aspects of wind pow­er gen­er­a­tion, includ­ing the emerg­ing tech­nolo­gies in the area, and dis­cuss the eco­nom­i­cal require­ments of wind ener­gy projects.

What you will learn

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe how wind energy is captured, converted, and best utilized through different wind power systems.
  • Describe the mechanics of different types of wind turbines (horizontal, vertical, and ducted).
  • Walk through the steps required to build residential or commercial wind energy projects (i.e. how to assess the potential of wind resources, choose the right system for your location, acquire land, acquire permits, and assess economic feasibility).
  • Understand the most exciting wind power innovations (vertical axis installations for houses, off-shore wind advancements, O-WIND urban turbines, Nemoi Vertical Axis Wind Turbines, etc.)
  • Explain major barriers to wind power installations (nimbyism, bird and insect deaths, noise) and what innovations are addressing them.

Gabriel John is a professional agrologist with extensive experience in program design and implementation in the areas of climate change, emissions management, clean energy, and emerging technologies. His government and academic work in the past decade has focused on developing strategic policies and innovative programs in the complex energy-environment nexus. Gabriel currently works on strategic environmental and sustainable energy policies and programs, including leading the development of policies relating to renewable development and the de-carbonization of the electricity sector.
