Meeting the emerging needs of Law Enforcement, the program provides a comprehensive management development education with a variety of electives to allow participants to focus on areas of interest or need. Courses within this program cover leadership fundamentals, human resource management, financial management, strategic decision-making, and business communication. Our graduates are well equipped for leadership positions and can be relied upon for strong decision-making and leadership skills within the police service.
Open to individuals currently employed within police jurisdictions as well as to those who intend to move into the police force, this program is designed for mid-level management professionals and for those aspiring to move into management, supervisory, and leadership positions.

This program was designed in collaboration with my employer, so obviously what you learn is something that they feel you need to know. I particularly enjoyed how the anecdotes from instructors and classmates helped to bring the information to life and gave it concrete meaning.
Management Development for Police Services Certificate student

Only interested in taking a course? You can register for a course without applying and enrolling in the program – browse our Management Development for Police Services courses. If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course you’ve taken will be applied toward your Certificate as long as it is still part of the program plan at the time of your application. Please note, program requirements are subject to change over time.
Enrolling in the program is a requirement if you want to earn the certificate. You may apply for admission as you start your studies or, if you prefer, after you have taken one or more courses.
We are open to students with a variety of educational and professional backgrounds. Our expectation is that you have a commitment to learn and achieve your continuing education goals.

This program is comprised of five core courses and 117 instructional hours of electives. Designed for part-time study, it can generally be completed within two to three years. Evening, weekend, and weekday learning opportunities are available to accommodate a variety of schedules.
Courses do not have to be completed in any specific order, allowing students to choose the courses that best fit their schedule in any given term.
A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the certificate (3.5 or higher earns a certificate with distinction).
Your program requirements
Once you are admitted, you can verify your program requirements by logging into the University of Alberta’s student portal, Bear Tracks, to view your Academic Advisement.
Applying for Graduation
Submit your request to graduate to obtain your credential, receive a parchment, and (optionally) attend the graduation ceremony. Apply for graduation between November 1 and February 1 via Bear Tracks.
- If you haven’t previously completed a program application, you must do so in order to qualify for graduation.
- You must apply for graduation even if you do not plan to attend the ceremony.

- Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you register for your classes.
- Courses are GST-exempt.
- Some courses require a textbook at an additional cost.
- Eligible for the Canada-Alberta Job Grant.
