Course Delivery Formats

In-class

Face to Face class format

These in-person classes may take place in downtown Edmonton, AB at Enterprise Square, University of Alberta Campus or at other locations across the province (check course descriptions for details). Any face-to-face class may be web-enhanced, requiring access to online course materials via eClass.

Web-Enhanced class format

Many courses offered by the Faculty of Extension may be web-enhanced, requiring student access to a computer and the internet. Web-Enhanced courses include online access to some learning materials such as readings, resources, links, discussions, etc. Access to the online component is provided through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.

Online

Synchronous class format

These online courses feature a real-time, virtual classroom element, where students and instructors 'attend' scheduled online lectures, and interact at the same time. For these virtual classroom sessions, students will require a computer with both audio input and output (such as a microphone-equipped headset). Access to the online component is provided through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.

Asynchronous class format

A flexible online experience, where you will move through the course material and activities at the same pace as the rest of the class. There are no real-time virtual classroom sessions to attend. Access to the online component is provided through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.

Self-Paced Asynchronous

A flexible online learning experience where you work through the course materials and activities at your own pace, within a specified time frame. There are no real-time virtual classroom sessions to attend.

Pre/Post Assignment
Some classes may have an assignment(s) due before or after your in-class learning component.

If courses have a pre and/or post assignments, there will a note on your Fee Assessment/Course Confirmation notices. Further information will be communicated to you via your UofA email account and/or eClass. Access to the online component is provided through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.
