History of Residential Furnishings

Explore the his­to­ry of fur­ni­ture and inte­ri­or dec­o­ra­tion from Greek and Roman clas­sics through the 18th cen­tu­ry to the present. Exam­ine the rela­tion­ship of art, archi­tec­ture and the dec­o­ra­tive arts in inte­ri­ors with­in the con­text of larg­er his­tor­i­cal events. In this course we will cov­er major fur­ni­ture styles and inte­ri­or design from the clas­si­cal to the present in Europe and North Amer­i­ca; his­tor­i­cal char­ac­ter­is­tics that are repeat­ed in con­tem­po­rary inte­ri­or dec­o­ra­tion; the rela­tion­ship of art, archi­tec­ture and the dec­o­ra­tive arts to his­tor­i­cal fur­ni­ture and inte­ri­or dec­o­rat­ing styles; and social, polit­i­cal and eco­nom­ic forces that influ­enced the peri­ods of inte­ri­or design styles.
