Health and Safety Committees

Joint Occu­pa­tion­al Health and Safe­ty (JOHS) Com­mit­tees are man­dat­ed in many juris­dic­tions and are con­sid­ered an essen­tial ele­ment of any health and safe­ty man­age­ment sys­tem. This sem­i­nar will exam­ine when and why a joint com­mit­tee should be estab­lished, how these com­mit­tees should be struc­tured and the var­i­ous tools avail­able to devel­op short and long term action plans aligned with the oper­a­tional envi­ron­ment of any orga­ni­za­tion. The sem­i­nar will also explore var­i­ous meth­ods to assess the effec­tive­ness of jOHS Com­mit­tees and com­mu­ni­cate con­tin­u­ous improve­ment strategies.

What you will learn

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Navigate legislation and identify committee requirements for various jurisdictions.
  • Understand the duties and functions of a joint committee and establish terms of reference that reflect operational requirements and applicable legislation.
  • Facilitate committee activities and establish systems for internal and external reporting.
  • Develop the tools necessary to communicate committee activities, address worker concerns, and resolve disputes.
  • Identify and prioritise committee improvement opportunities.
  • Evaluate committee effectiveness and develop continuous improvement strategies.

  • This online, self-paced course is to be completed within the start and end dates specified.
  • Each module of this course builds on the previous ones. To make sure each student understands the concepts before moving on, content of more advanced modules will be only be released for access after the previous module assignment has been completed by the student and graded by the instructor. In other words: Module 2 content will only be released when the Module 1 assignment has been submitted and graded, Module 3 will be released after the completion of Module 2, and so on.
  • Graded on a pass or fail basis: a passing grade of 70% or higher is required to receive Completed Requirements (CR) on your transcript.
