Amendments in Health and Safety Law
On December 14, 2017, The Alberta Government passed Bill 30, which established a new Occupational Health and Safety Act in Alberta (Effective June 1, 2018). The Alberta Government has also committed to bringing in new regulation and code provisions to modernize health and safety law in Alberta and bring it in line with other Canadian jurisdictions. This course will provide students with information on the fundamental legal changes and how the new law will apply to work sites.
Course at a glance
- This is a blended (online + in-class) course; its online components are accessible through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.
- Designed mainly for students who have taken the course Health and Safety Law (EXOS4624) prior to June 2018, this seminar will update learners on the changes in Alberta’s OHS law that came into effect on June 1, 2018.
- Aimed at entry-level and practicing health and safety coordinators, professionals, officers, technicians, supervisors, trainers, management, and administrators.
What you will learn
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Identify the changes to the occupational health and safety law in Alberta that took effect in 2018.
- Develop a practical and feasible plan for complying with the new requirements under the Act, Regulation, and Code in the workplace or respond to incidents accordingly.
This course has no prerequisites
Students from all educational backgrounds welcome. You can register for this course without applying and enrolling in a program.

- Blended courses combine in-class and online activities; be sure to refer to your course schedule to learn more about when the class meets in person and when you’ll be completing work online.
- Post-class activities are required as part of this course. This information will be communicated to you via your ualberta email address and the class syllabus.
- Students are required to bring to class a printed copy of the most current version of Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Regulation, and Code in its entirety. Digital copies of the Act can be acquired, free of charge, at the Alberta Queen’s Printer website (www.qp.alberta.ca).
- To pass this course, students must achieve a minimum final grade of 70%.
- Students are encouraged to bring their own laptops or tablets to class.
You can register for and take a course without applying and enrolling into the program.
