Emergency Management Framework

OHS pro­fes­sion­als are often called upon to lead an orga­ni­za­tion’s emer­gency man­age­ment team. Exam­ine case stud­ies and post-event reviews to learn about the four pil­lars of emer­gency man­age­ment – prevention/​mitigation, pre­pared­ness, response, and recov­ery – and explore the ways in which they inter­act in real-life sce­nar­ios. Under­stand how an emer­gency man­age­ment pro­gram is struc­tured as you work through the Cana­di­an Stan­dard for Emer­gency and Con­ti­nu­ity Management.
What you will learn

  • Explain the key aspects of each of the pillars of emergency management.
  • Relate how the pillars of emergency management are connected and work collaboratively.
  • Show how the requirements listed in the CSA Standard have been addressed or omitted when reviewing an organization's program or its response to an emergency event.
  • Use the CSA Standard Z1600-17 to build a basic emergency management and business continuity program.

Currently Director of Emergency Management Services for the Alberta Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Brad Andres has extensive experience in safety and emergency management. He was a Safety Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force and later worked as an Emergency Management Officer for the Government of Alberta, where he was responsible for coordinating support from all government departments for communities that were impacted by emergencies and disasters such as pipeline breaks, flooding, and ice storms. In his current role, Brad makes sure that the department has the appropriate response plans in place, as well as staff trained and equipment ready to respond to any animal disease, crop pest, and food safety incidents and emergencies.
