FA1 topic: Creating Healthier Communities
At the crossroad between public health and urban planning, healthy built environments (HBE) initiatives have been multiplying in forward-thinking communities all over the world. An international expert in the field, Dr. Karen Lee will guide learners on an exploration of how urban planning can be instrumental in the prevention of global pandemics like obesity, diabetes, and cancer.
What you will learn
- Through lectures, group discussions, and field visits, this intensive two-day, full-day course will discuss the key built environment factors that influence physical activity and diets in both positive and negative ways.
- Learn about strategies for implementing policy and practice interventions for improving the built environment for physical activity and healthy eating, and examine examples of cities that have successfully implemented HBE interventions and achieved results.
- Identify the co-benefits like economic, environmental and accessibility benefits for municipalities that have been documented from creating a healthier community. Current work and resources for Alberta communities wanting to start or expand this work will also be shared.
