Palette Knife Painting

Learn how to use a palette knife as a paint­ing tool to achieve expres­sive mark-mak­ing with heavy paint appli­ca­tion. Explore the method of impas­to to apply lay­ers of paint and cre­ate paint­ings with thick, tex­tured sur­face and vis­i­ble strokes. Through a series of guid­ed projects, you’ll be intro­duced to var­i­ous palette knife tech­niques as you pro­duce stud­ies from obser­va­tion and copy a few paint­ings to learn from one of the old mas­ters. Depend­ing on your pref­er­ence, we will work to cre­ate land­scape, flo­ral, or semi-abstract paint­ings. Open to artists of all levels.

Frequently invited as a guest speaker to international conferences, Izabella Orzelski has received numerous awards and grants, including a Winspear Fund Grant and a Dahesh Museum Award in New York. Among her commissioned works are the life-size portraits of Dr. Harriet Winspear and the late Honourable Lois E. Hole, former Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. Izabella holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Art and a Ph.D. in education from the University of Alberta.

  • This is a syn­chro­nous course that fea­tures live online activ­i­ties at pre­de­ter­mined times. To start your online learn­ing expe­ri­ence vis­it www​.ext​-leo​.ca/​s​t​u​dents. Please bring to first class: Can­vas: 16×20 or small­er, a jar of acrylic gel (250 ml, reg­u­lar, gloss), palette knife — dia­mond shape 1.5″-2″, tem­pera pow­der (white), pen­cil, eras­er, and a plas­tic con­tain­er w/​lid (250 ml, to mix paste & store it for lat­er use). Rest of sup­plies will be dis­cussed in the first class.
