Emergency Planning and Response

Being pre­pared for and respond­ing effec­tive­ly to emer­gen­cies in the work­place is a key activ­i­ty in the field of occu­pa­tion­al health and safe­ty. Learn the fun­da­men­tals of what steps and process­es are used to devel­op emer­gency response plans, as you explore the legal require­ments for emer­gency plan­ning, the key ele­ments required in an emer­gency plan, and the basics on how to train staff to exe­cute the plan.

  • While this course is mostly self-paced, students will need to complete specific activities by the due dates in order to advance to the next activity.
What you will learn

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the key aspects of hazard identification and hazard management.
  • Define what an emergency is.
  • Recall the legal requirements to have emergency plans
  • Identify specific items that must be incorporated into emergency plans.
This course has no prerequisites

Students from all educational backgrounds welcome. You can register for this course without applying and enrolling in a program.

Take note:

  • Graded on a pass or fail basis:  Students must complete all assessments and receive a minimum of 70% in order to pass the course to receive Completed Requirements (CR) on your transcript.
  • The online components of this course are facilitated through eClass, the University of Alberta’s eLearning management tool.
  • Required Course Materials: Please go to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) website and purchase the Emergency Response Planning Guide book if you do not already own it. Students will need to set up an account to purchase the book.
